The Master Data Services in SQL Server 2016 RC2 appears to be a significant improvement over what shipped with SQL Server 2014 GA. There’s obvious UI improvements. But more importantly with almost no effort I was able to get Verification to work properly using the local MDS web portal coupled with the MDS Excel integration. For the latter, I had Excel 2013 installed along with the MDS Excel add-in for SQL Server 2016 RC2 that I downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

Controlled Vocabulary (Vocabulary) – list of distinct, selected terms or keywords
Dictionary or Glossary – a vocabulary with definition(s)
Grammar – a set of structural rules governing the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given language
Taxonomy – terms from a vocabulary, dictionary or glossary that are structured or organized by a classification system that is most often hierarchical in nature (but this is not a requirement).
Folksonomy – terms from a vocabulary, dictionary or glossary are categorized by a set of users’ tags or keywords.
Ontology, Semantic Network, Knowledge Graphs – superset of capabilities relative to a taxonomy that includes properties (with or without data types) as well as potentially arbitrary interrelationships; a set of types, properties, and relationships.

Master Data Management vs. Master Metadata Management?
Has anyone else been thinking deeply about the difference between the two? …it’s pretty significant and something I’ll be researching for the next few weeks.
The impetus for this project is a long history working in the fields of content migration (SharePoint-SharePoint and SharePoint-non SharePoint), information replication and synchronization (working with client using Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint and architecting its extension to support real-time replication between Lotus Notes and SharePoint for the US Navy), and large scale, heterogeneous, enterprise architecture software systems (based on BiZZdesign Enterprise Studio).
Additional background context includes my experiences with SharePoint (and Office 365, Microsoft’s cloud hosted version of SharePoint and the rest of the Office system), Salesforce, SQL Server (and the Microsoft data platform), and Microsoft Dynamics CRM, in turn, are all examples of large metadata-driven enterprise software platforms.
More recently, with the support of the product group I’ve been taking a critical look at Microsoft’s cloud hosted *data* catalog solution (Azure Data Catalog) as a Master X Management platform. I’m trying to figure would what the best description for X is …now and as ADC evolves going forward.

Michael Herman – Welcome to the converged worlds of Enterprise Architecture, the Internet of Things, Enterprise Content Management, and Hyper Taxonomies
This is my personal blog. I’m Michael Herman, a technology veteran and corporate enterprise architect, originally from Calgary, Alberta – now living in Toronto. Most people will know me as a “SharePoint guy” who worked for Microsoft Consulting Services and the SharePoint product group as an FTE for the launch of SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and then as a consultant to the product group for SharePoint 2003, SharePoint 2007, and SharePoint 2010.
Following my time at Micosoft, I founded Parallelspace Corporation, a boutique enterprise collaboration consulting organization that specialized in Truly Collaborative™ business solutions based on SharePoint, Exchange and Outlook, and Groove Networks Workspace.
Today, I work as both a SharePoint consultant and as an architect with broad and deep experience in the fields of enterprise architecture, product management, change management and business transformation.

Hyperonomy
Hyperonomy is the practice of bringing order to data and information to gain increased insight and understanding. For me, in a practical sense, this is about the convergence of enterprise content management (ECM), enterprise architecture and hyper taxonomies.
A hyponymy shows the relationship between the more general terms (hypernyms) and the more specific instances of it (hyponyms). A hyponym is a word or phrase whose meaning is more specific than its hypernym. The scope of a hypernym is broader than that of a hyponym.
